Charity Champions Grand Prize

Putnam Valley High School's Make A Difference Club really made a difference in supporting a new community based anti-drug awareness and education organization, Drug Crisis In Our Backyard. The Club's fund raising efforts, which included a Stay-Awake-A-Thon, raised thousands of dollars for the organization. For their efforts they were named Grand Prize Winners in the Charity Champions Competition and Optimum Community donated an additional $5,000 in their name to this important charity. The students say they learned a lot about the disease of addiction while forging new connections with the community they live in.

Milan Memorial Day Parade

Milan may be the least populous town in all of Dutchess County, but it's Memorial Day Parade and Flag Ceremony provides a moving tribute to the memory of all those who have made the supreme sacrifice to defend our freedom. Under sunny skies with a brisk wind blowing, this year's event was dedicated to our Gulf War veterans.

Meet the Leaders at School, West Nyack

Cablevision's Meet The Leaders produced a Special Town Hall Style Television Program on the Opioid and Heroin epidemic.  Students and parents from Rockland County came to Clarkstown South H.S. to interact with NY State Senator David Carlucci, the Commissioner of the NY State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services Arlene Gonzalez-Sanchez, and Caren Schwartz who lost her son to a heroin overdose.

Tiny Picasso Exhibit, Spring Valley

The Finkelstein Memorial Library in Spring Valley celebrates the artwork of Rockland County's youngest artists with its annual Tiny Picasso Exhibit. NY State Assembly Members Ken Zebrowski and Ellen Jaffee and Rockland County Executive Ed Day all stopped by to celebrate the work of young artists. The program encourages children to play to learn, and also to learn to play!

Edward Bouchet is a name that unfortunately doesn't always come to mind when we think of some of the most influential African Americans in the world of higher education and science. That is exactly why Emily Afriyie decided to choose him as her subject for Optimum Community's Black History Month Essay Contest, and also why the Our Lady of Perpetual Help 8th grader was a finalist in the Middle School category.

Easter Rising Centenary, Pearl River

At Rockland County's Gaelic Athletic Fields in Pearl River and at locations around the world, people of Irish descent commemorated the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin Ireland. The Proclamation of the Irish Republic was read, wreaths were presented for those who died along with military unit gun salutes, and speakers recounted how the failed rebellion led to a successful fight for Independence from Britain.

Charity Champions, North Salem

North Salem Middle / High School students are Optimum Community Charity Champions.  Their 4th Annual How-To Festival raised funds for the North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corp.  At the Festival, students lead workshops and seminars for members of the community in how to do things they are accomplished at. Workshops included how to play the ukulele, fly a single engine airplane, make slime, sculpt doll heads and more. To salute the students for their efforts to make North Salem a better community, Optimum Community donated an additional $1,000 to the Ambulance Corp.

2016 Rockland Community Foundation Gala

Foundation supporters gathered at the Hudson Water Club in Haverstraw to celebrate this year's foundation honorees. At the Signature Gala they honored founder Simona Chazen and long-time supporter Judge William Sherwood.  The Rockland Community Foundation now represents over 50 local charitable organizations and causes.

Charity Champions, Beacon

Beacon High School's Students Against Destructive Decisions Club ran a school district wide photo contest to raise funds for Puppies Behind Bars.  The program, which includes the nearby Fishkill Correctional Facility, sees prison inmates train companion dogs for Veterans returning from combat zones, suffering from PTSD and traumatic brain injuries. The S.A.D.D. Club is an Optimum Community Charity Champion, and in addition to the $2,400 raised by the Picture Perfect Pets photo contest, Optimum Community donated $1,000 to Puppies Behind Bars.

The 54th Annual Rockland County St. Patrick's Parade is dedicated to the men and women of the 1916 whose centennial is celebrated this year. All throughout the Hudson Valley "Ireland's Exiled Children in America" honor those who sacrificed themselves for the people of their beloved Emerald Isle.

Charity Champions Fundraiser, Putnam Valley

Putnam Valley High School's Make A Difference Club members are Charity Champions, hosting a Stay-Awake-a-Thon to raise funds to support a local organization Drug Crisis In Our Backyard.  Founded by two sets of parents who lost sons to heroin addiction, Drug Crisis In Our Backyard is dedicated to community education and support for families with addicted children. On behalf of the students, Optimum Community has awarded Drug Crisis In Our Backyard $1,000 to support its ongoing efforts.

21st Annual Dutchess County St. Patrick's Day Parade

This year the wearing of the Green takes on special meaning.  It's the 100th Anniversary of the Easter Rising in Dublin that proclaimed establishment of the Irish Republic and  launched  the drive for independence.  Today we honor those who sacrificed themselves for the people of their beloved Emerald Isle as we  celebrate Irish Culture and Heritage at the 21st Annual Dutchess County Saint Patrick's Parade.

In Pearl River over 300 gathered for the 2016 Emerald Ball, a fund raiser for the Rockland County Saint Patrick's Day Parade and a special night to applaud this year's Hibernian honorees. Organized for its 4th year by regional think-tank Pattern for Progress, the event brought back from the Hudson Valley Democratic Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney and Republican Congressman Chris Gibson.

The Dutchess County Saint Patrick's Day Parade Committee sponsors this major fund raising event and in a ball room glowing with green lights introduced the Grand Marshal for this year's parade. Bruce Caneeny retired as Chief of Detectives for the Dutchess County Sheriff's Department and has worked on the Parade Committee since its inception 21 years ago.  This year's Dutchess County Saint Patricks's Day Parade steps off Saturday March 5th at 1P.M. and will be seen by Irish American's around the world on optimum.net/community.

MasterChef Junior Event, Hyde Park

On your mark, get set, cook! It was a cook-off for some very young gourmands and the competition was hot! Optimum Community partnered with Fox Network to bring a MasterChef Junior Challenge to the Culinary Institute of America where Hyde Park area elementary students tightened their aprons and put their cooking skills to the test, hoping to impress judges such as State Senator Sue Serino, Hyde Park Supervisor Aileen Rohr and Town of Poughkeepsie Supervisor Todd Tancredi. And as these future Chefs were busy whipping up delicious dishes for the judges, they were also learning some great tips on how to make healthy choices in the kitchen.

Some Tuckahoe High School students are learning the true meaning of giving back to their community. As we hear from Neighborhood Journal's Kimberly Hart, the students recently assisted Habitat for Humanity in building housing units for some of the region's veterans, an effort which earned them the title of Charity Champions.
